Peace Weavers – mobilizing youth leaders to counter hate speech and violence in crisis zones in Cameroon

YADEF through our Executive Director is glad to join the community of peace weavers in the crisis zones of Cameroon. Peace Weaver is an initiative of Civic Watch Cameroon and Defy Hate Now bringing together vibrant youths hailing from different communities in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon to the world of hate speech and conflict mitigation. From August 1st to 3rd 2024, these youth leaders including YADEF executive director started with their first residential training in Bamenda. The second training which will take place in Buea will be another capacity building action to equip youths with the necessary skills to initiate community peace building initiatives and cracking down hate speech online and offline. The first training in Bamenda provide a platform for youths to digdeep as to what is hate speech and its manifestation in online and offline community life. The resourceful facilitators also drilled these youths on key areas such as; • Understanding and mitigating hate speech: how to build community resilience by addressing and countering harmful rhetoric • Conflict dynamics analysis: exploring the complexities of conflict in the English-speaking regions to address local issues better • Mainstreaming gender: strategies to tackle hate and gender biases, ensuring inclusivity and equality • Youth leadership for peace: empowering youth leaders to foster peace and reconciliation in their communities and on social media platforms, etc. All these modules and more provided the peace weavers with the skills to drive positive change in their communities. For YADEF, we will leverage this initiative to engage other young people for hate and violent free communities in Cameroon. As an organization promoting youth development, we understand the role of youths in community peace building. Access to opportunities is determine by quality of education received.

Education is fundamental for a positive and humane transition into the future and for development that is sustainable.

If you want to empower society, empower the girl child.

“Decisions are data driven” using research to diagnose and understand community challenges will inform effective programming of humanitarian and development projects.

If you want to build strong and accountable society, start by building strong families.

Poverty is the worst enemy of mankind; if eradicated, life will be better but if not, the society soles a seed for its own implosion.

We are very devoted to promoting quality education that we make the future of students our mission.

A book is a force for creating and sharing knowledge - donate a book to help children from poor and underdeveloped communities’ access quality education materials.

The number of climate displaced people will increase globally in the coming years – countries must act NOW to better protect the #RightToEducation from the impact of climate change and environmental uncertainties.

Everything we do and every action we make has an impact on the world around us.

“There are just no two ways to peace, peace is the way”.

Poor quality of education will affect the lives of young people in this decade and the next - which is why we are mobilizing actions, committing resources and bringing youths up to speed bringing their dreams and actions to life.
